6 Christmas Decorating Ideas for a Festive Home

November 3rd, 2020 | Share via:

It’s not just Jose Marie Chan’s hit song; the eye-catching Christmas decors also signal the start of the holiday season in the Philippines. It doesn’t matter whether you decorate as early as September or a few days before Noche Buena. The important thing is you style your house and lot in a way that best evoke the holiday spirit.

It doesn’t have to be a costly and tiring chore. With your creativity and the following decorating ideas, your place will constantly remind you of the merry season.

Tree with a Twist

Every year, there are TV features about grand Christmas trees in malls, hotels, and celebrities’ homes. It’s up to you if you also like such a spectacle in your own place. One essence of having your own house and lot is that you can decorate it as simply or elaborately as you want.

You can hang traditional ornaments on your tree. Think of garlands, balls, lights, poinsettias, bells, and candy canes. If you prefer to be unique, try hanging dream catchers, origami projects, or stuffed toys.

In case you like something that’s easy to adorn, consider a tabletop Christmas tree. This can be store-bought or handcrafted. The beauty of this decor is that you can place more than one on your console table, on end table, or even on coffee table.

You can choose from miniature versions of the artificial tree, which are usually made from plastic. Other alternatives include those that are made from ceramic, wood, cardboard, paper, and recycled materials.

Lines of Lights

Christmas lights are probably the most versatile holiday decor. They can be placed indoors and outdoors. Aside from providing glow, they can also be arranged to form shapes and patterns.  Or, they can be used to outline your house’s frame. Add them to enhance the garlands on your tree and stair railings as well. For livelier interior and front yard, choose colorful lights with accompanying tunes.

For daytime sparkle, make sure you have glittered decors. Those with metallic finishes help reflect light, too. Thus, they make a room look brighter during the day.

Gleeful Greetings

Christmas banners are also a staple in homes and establishments. Instead of buying though, consider making your own or print one yourself. If you don’t have to time to hang a banner or make your own, get wall stickers that feature ‘Merry Christmas’ or any other holiday greetings.

Another option is to purchase a framed handwritten greeting from a local calligrapher. You can even ask for a customized work. To find one, you can head to Facebook or Instagram and search for calligraphy works.

Chic Centerpieces

Those small tabletop Christmas trees can already serve as centerpieces. You can further experiment using local handicrafts. For example, you can get a handwoven basket and fill it with artificial garlands and holly berries.

In case you like something natural, a potted poinsettia is an option. You can also mix pine cones, rattan balls and dried twigs in one container. Then, decorate the container with red, green, gold, or silver ribbons.

Snow globes and Christmas candles are great choices, too. Also known as snowdomes, the spherical decors are ideal for your coffee table. The candles better suit your dining table. You can even spice things up by using candles that have holiday scents like cinnamon, pine, and sugar cookie.

Enticing Extras

Complement your holiday centerpiece with a Christmas-themed table runner or mantle. You can also hang curtains and put beddings that are specifically designed for this season. If you want to go all out, use seat covers and throw pillowcases that bear holiday symbols or greetings.

Freestanding decors are worth considering, too. These could be made from ceramic, wood, and a mixture of plastic and metal. If you have kids and pets at home though, you might prefer stuffed Santa, elves, and reindeers instead. Decorations made from Styrofoam also serve as alternatives.

You can go the extra mile by setting up a life-size belen or a mini-Christmas village in your front yard. This will delight not just you but passersby as well. If you invest in an affordable house and lot, and intend to sell your home within a few years’ time, the increased attention to your property may turn out beneficial.

Other extras include the socks and wreaths. Holiday-themed doormats are fun additions as well.

A Series of Stars

Star-shaped decors are the most symbolic. It’s not surprising that a star tree-topper and a parol in front of the house are so common. If these aren’t enough for you, grab some star-shaped ornaments that you can hang on your tree or stickers you can put on your walls and doors.

Instead of one big lantern, have three or five in front of your home. For a brighter yard, add Christmas lights with star-shaped bulbs.
